Woman with a Mandolin

This one's called Woman with a Mandolin — a painting by the French artist Georges Braque, nineteen thirty-seven. Oil on canvas — pigment ground into a slow-drying oil, which is what lets a painter go back into wet paint for days. It is among the darkest surfaces here: measured across the whole picture it gives back very little light. Braque was part of the cubism movement.
