Before you is Ivory Coast Baulé — a drawing by Norman Lewis, nineteen thirty-five. Pastel: pigment in stick form, laid down dry, which is why the colour is as strong as pigment gets and why it can still smudge. Somewhere in there: the carved figure, and the portrait of a person. Lewis was part of the abstract expressionism movement.
