Before you is Gibraltar, made by Alexander Calder in nineteen thirty-six from lignum vitae, walnut, steel rods and painted wood. Lignum vitae is among the densest woods there is — it sinks in water — and Calder has balanced it on rods so the whole thing looks provisional.
