Untitled (Bébé Marie)

This is Untitled, called Bébé Marie, made by Joseph Cornell in the early nineteen fortyies. A papered wood box holds a doll in a cloth dress and a straw hat, and around her, dried flowers and twigs flecked with paint. Cornell built these boxes at his kitchen table in Queens, out of things bought secondhand.
