Ossip Zadkine · 1928

This is Torso, carved by Ossip Zadkine in ebony in nineteen twenty-eight. Ebony is brutally hard and takes a polish like stone, and Zadkine has cut into it rather than around it — the hollows are where the carving went inward. It was given in memory of the collector Maurice Speiser by his wife.
