You're looking at The Hand of Man — a photograph by Alfred Stieglitz, nineteen oh two. A photogravure: the photograph is etched into a copper plate and printed as ink lying in the recesses, so the image stands very slightly off the paper. In the picture, look for the train. Stieglitz was part of the Photo-Secession movement.
