The Back (III)

Henri Matisse · Issy-les-Moulineaux, by May 13, 1913 - early fall 1916

The third Back, from the war years. The column of hair now runs the full height of the figure and reads as a support rather than as hair, and the body either side of it is symmetrical in a way no body is. The relief is being resolved into a few vertical masses.
