You're looking at I and the Village, painted by Marc Chagall in Paris in nineteen eleven, out of memories of Vitebsk where he grew up. The green-faced man and the cow meet along a line of sight running straight through the canvas, the cow dreams of the milkmaid, and behind them the houses stand upside down.
