This is Portrait of Alfred Stieglitz, made by Arthur Dove in nineteen twenty-four — and there is no face in it. Dove assembled a lens, a mirrored glass plate, springs, steel wool, glue and nails on a board. Stieglitz was a photographer, and this is a portrait built out of his apparatus.
