This is Policeman in Bermondsey — a photograph by the British artist Bill Brandt, nineteen thirty-eight. Brandt was part of the Symbolism movement. It's gelatin silver print, printed nineteen seventyies, about 23 by 20 centimeters. It is among the darkest surfaces here: measured across the whole picture it gives back very little light. You can pick out the door.
