This one's called No. 1 (Untitled) — a painting by the American artist Mark Rothko, nineteen forty-eight. Rothko was part of the abstract expressionism movement. Oil on canvas — pigment ground into a slow-drying oil, which is what lets a painter go back into wet paint for days.
