Before you is Graffiti — a photograph by the French artist Brassaï (Gyula Halász), nineteen forty-four to nineteen forty-five. A gelatin silver print — the standard black-and-white photograph of the twentieth century, paper coated in gelatin holding light-sensitive silver, developed by hand in a tray. You can pick out the human face.
