This is Canyon, made by Robert Rauschenberg in nineteen fifty-nine. The materials list runs: oil, pencil, paper, metal, photograph, fabric, wood, canvas, buttons, mirror, cardboard, a pillow, a spent paint tube — and a taxidermied bald eagle. Rauschenberg called these Combines, and refused the distinction between painting and sculpture that they made impossible to maintain.
